Turkish Authorities Conduct Widespread Raids on LGBTQ Groups

Turkish authorities have launched a coordinated crackdown on the LGBTQ community, resulting in the detention of dozens of activists and the imprisonment of 16 individuals in Izmir. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek stated that the operation, titled My Family is Safe, involves 163 suspects, nine associations, and 13 companies across 15 provinces, including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Mersin, and Aydin. The raids targeted the offices and private residences of several queer organizations, including Kaos GL and Ünikuir. Authorities seized computers, mobile phones, servers, and tablets during these actions.

Government officials and prosecutors state that the measures aim to protect children and traditional family values. Allegations cited by the authorities include prostitution, obscenity, and the inappropriate influence of sexual orientation and gender identity on minors. The Justice Minister linked the operations to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's vision for a decade of family and population.

Financial investigators are also examining foreign funding received by LGBTQ organizations. This includes payments from the German Consulate in Istanbul to the Association for Social Policy, Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation (SPoD), as well as funding from France and the United States. While SPoD maintains that all funding was legally approved, government linked media have characterized these payments as the West financing a plague or perversion.

Human rights advocates and international observers have condemned the move. Nacho Sánchez Amor, the European Parliament's rapporteur for Turkey, described the arrests as a shocking escalation of repression. Center right sources frame the event as a political campaign by Erdoğan to satisfy his conservative voter base, while center sources focus on the legal outcomes and the specific organizations affected.
