Turkish authorities detained at least 150 people on Tuesday during a gathering outside Istanbul's Caglayan courthouse. The demonstrators had planned to protest recent detentions targeting LGBTQ+ groups. Police intervened and prevented the group from making a press statement while protesters chanted, "Long live life in defiance of hate."
These detentions follow a broader operation titled "My Family is Safe," which the government states is intended to protect children and family values. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek reported that investigations across 15 provinces involved 162 suspects, nine associations, and 13 businesses. Recent actions include the jailing of 16 people pending trial in Izmir, as well as detentions of at least 26 people in Istanbul and 21 in Ankara over the weekend.
Authorities have also blocked social media accounts and websites belonging to independent media outlets, individuals, and LGBTQ+ associations, including the X account of Amnesty International's Turkey branch. Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O'Flaherty expressed concern over these restrictions. He stated that references to family values or the protection of children do not justify human rights restrictions and called for the release of those detained for civil society work.
