Two Arrested After Brutal Murder of Mexican Musician and Family

Authorities in the State of Mexico have arrested two men in connection with the brutal murder of Jonathan Meléndez, the founder and keyboardist of the indie rock band Camilo Séptimo, and three other people. The victims, found in an apartment in Atizapán de Zaragoza on September 1, include Meléndez, his four month pregnant wife Ana Paula, their three year old daughter, and a 21 year old domestic worker named Aleyda Romero. A six year old son of the couple was found alive and uninjured under a bed. The family dog was also killed.

According to the State of Mexico Attorney General's Office, the victims showed signs of violence and some were found tied up. Investigators believe the attacker used a relationship of trust to enter the home. One of the detainees, 51 year old Diego Sebastián Rosen, is an Argentine national and business partner of Meléndez. He is alleged to be the material and intellectual author of the crime. A second man, identified as Gerardo N, is being investigated as an accomplice who allegedly helped the primary aggressor leave the scene.

Motives under investigation include a dispute over cryptocurrency and 300,000 pesos. Additional reports indicate that Rosen owned a travel company called NOMAD Adventures and had been accused by others of committing fraud.

The music community has reacted with widespread grief. Artist Silvana Estrada and members of bands such as Enjambre and Ximena Sariñana expressed their condolences and called for justice. While most reports focus on the brutality of the crime and the legal proceedings, some coverage emphasizes the cultural loss and the musical legacy of Meléndez within the synthpop and indie rock genres.
