Rescue teams in Nepal recovered two survivors on Saturday, ten days after a massive glacial and rock collapse on August 26 triggered devastating flash floods along the border with China. The survivors include a Chinese national, identified as Luhaitao, who was found 225 meters inside a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project, and Chandrika Shrestha, a 64 year old woman rescued from her mud buried home in the Nuwakot district. These rescues followed the recovery of two Nepali hydropower workers, Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharjan, who were found alive on Friday in the Trishuli 3A tunnel. Both the Chinese man and the Nepali woman were airlifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment.

The overall death toll has reached at least 1,375 people, with 1,344 deaths reported in Nepal and 31 in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. More than 5,000 people remain missing, including approximately 900 hydropower workers. International rescue teams from India, China, South Korea, and the United States are assisting the Nepali military in searching blocked tunnels and debris. In Nepal, authorities have buried 1,030 unidentified bodies in mass graves after taking DNA samples, a move that has sparked outrage among some who say it violates Hindu religious traditions.

India reports that 275 of its nationals are still missing, while 169 have been rescued. The Indian government has provided approximately 95 tonnes of relief material to Nepal. Meanwhile, the disaster has caused significant economic damage, with at least 12 hydropower projects destroyed. Some estimates suggest the cost of the disaster could reach four to five billion dollars, which represents about ten percent of Nepal's annual economic output.

Diplomatic tensions have emerged regarding the cause of the disaster. Some reports indicate that the Nepali Foreign Minister suggested that major industrial emitters should compensate Nepal for climate change. In response, Indian officials stated that climate change is a common challenge and that developed countries historically responsible for emissions must take the lead in providing financial assistance and technology transfer.
