Two Social Leaders Murdered in Cajibío, Cauca

James Flor and María Palechor, a married couple and community leaders, were murdered on Tuesday, September 1, in the rural sector of Las Casitas, located in the corregimiento of La Pedregosa in Cajibío, Cauca. According to reports, several armed men arrived at the location and shot the couple repeatedly, resulting in their deaths at the scene. María Palechor served as an indigenous and community leader and coordinated the Women's Program and the Human Rights Program of the Regional Indigenous Council of Cauca (CRIC). James Flor was affiliated with the Victims' Table.

The Institute for Studies for Development and Peace (Indepaz) reported that these killings bring the total number of community leaders violently killed in Colombia this year to 103, averaging one death every 2.3 days. The Ombudsman's Office had previously warned of high risks to human rights in Cajibío due to territorial control by the Jaime Martínez Front, a dissident group. Other active groups in the region include the Dagoberto Ramos and Carlos Patiño Fronts of the Western Block, as well as local gangs.

While the center left source focuses on the immediate tragedy and the need for authorities to investigate the link between the murders and the victims' social work, the center right source provides broader geopolitical context. The latter frames the event within a history of land disputes between indigenous groups, Black communities, and landowners, as well as the competition between illegal armed groups over cocaine corridors and illegal gold mining.
