Two residents of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, have died from measles, according to the state Department of Health. These represent the first measles deaths in the United States in 2026 and the first deaths from the disease in Pennsylvania in 35 years. Both individuals were unvaccinated.
Pennsylvania has confirmed 393 cases of measles across 28 counties so far in 2026. Nationally, the United States has recorded more than 2,700 cases this year, marking a second consecutive year of record numbers and the highest annual total since 1991. Although the disease was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, more cases have occurred in the last 18 months than in the previous 25 years combined. Experts anticipate the U.S. may lose its elimination status from the World Health Organization.
Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen stated that the MMR vaccine is safe and provides the best protection against the disease. Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center, described the deaths as entirely preventable. Health officials noted that two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97 percent effective. Symptoms of the highly contagious virus include fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed by a rash that spreads downward from the head. The virus can remain infectious in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours.
