U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll Resigns Amid Internal Conflict

U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigned on Monday after a conversation with President Donald Trump. While the White House has not provided an official reason for the departure, sources indicate the resignation follows months of friction between Driscoll and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly described Driscoll as a highly effective official who advanced the president's agenda, specifically noting his work on readiness, lethality, and diplomatic efforts regarding Russia and Ukraine.

Reports indicate that a primary source of conflict was Hegseth's removal of high ranking military officers. Among those dismissed was General Randy George, the former chief of the Army Staff, who was an ally of Driscoll. Other ousted officials include James Mingus and Christopher Donahue. The Army now faces a leadership vacuum in its top civil and military positions, as the chief of the Army Staff remains under interim leadership.

Disagreements also centered on the modernization of the Army. Driscoll focused on innovation and drone technology, including the establishment of a specialized Unmanned Assault Battalion in Europe to study the Ukraine Russia war. However, Hegseth and acting Army Chief of Staff General Christopher LaNeve directed the dismantling of this unit, transitioning it back into a regular infantry battalion. An Army spokesperson stated the unit would still deliver its findings to inform future force design.

A center right source characterized the event as a struggle for the direction of the Army and a reorganization of the command structure. A left leaning source framed the departure as a loss of a champion for innovation and suggested that modernization efforts were being deliberately rolled back to punish political threats.
