UAAP Season 89 Officially Opens with New Regulations and Focus on Community

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has officially opened Season 89, hosted by Far Eastern University at the Mall of Asia Arena. Under the theme "For Everyone, UAAP," the opening ceremony recognized the support staff, faculty, and campus workers who assist student athletes. The event featured a parade of athletes on an LED floor, an oath led by FEU football player Nikk Dhrea Duran, and performances by Vice Ganda and Gloc-9. UAAP Season 89 chairman Johnny Montinola emphasized that the league serves as a platform for student development and a contributor to national teams such as Gilas Pilipinas and Alas Pilipinas.

Several new rules are being implemented for the current season. Teams are now permitted to have two foreign student athletes on their roster, although only one may be active on the court at a time. To address the "one and done" phenomenon, the league will require a year of residency for players who graduated from non UAAP schools before they can compete, a rule that will take effect in Season 90. Additionally, the league is implementing stricter FIBA style officiating and a new suspension system to improve bench decorum and technical foul management.

Individual team dynamics are shifting as the basketball tournament begins. The La Salle Green Archers are defending their men's championship without center Mike Phillips. The University of the Philippines is adding center Veejay Pre to their roster following his residency year. Meanwhile, the Ateneo Blue Eagles are entering the season under interim coach Louie Alas. Coach Alas admitted the team is not yet at the level of the rest of the league, noting that the team faced significant challenges after the deaths of players Divine Adili and Rene Baterbonia during a June training camp and the subsequent resignation and lifetime ban of former coach Tab Baldwin.
