The British government has requested that social media companies remove videos that glorify dangerous driving after a series of fatal accidents in the United Kingdom and Ireland. These incidents are linked to a viral trend where groups, primarily composed of young men, film themselves driving in the wrong direction on major roads. In one recent occurrence near Middlesbrough in northern England, two police officers, Matthew Blades and Tom Clough, and five young people aged 17 to 23 died when a Volkswagen Passat traveling in the wrong direction collided with a marked police vehicle. Police later arrested 12 people as part of an investigation into criminal activities preceding the crash, including reports of vehicles intentionally colliding with buildings.
Defense Minister Luke Pollard stated that the government will use powers under the Online Safety Act to ensure the removal of content showing irresponsible driving.
