UK Home Office Credits New France Deal With Stopping 4,300 Migrants

The UK Home Office has announced that French authorities intercepted 4,300 migrants and stopped 185 potential crossings over four separate weeks this summer. This follows a border security deal agreed upon in April under the Starmer government, which provides 501 million pounds over three years to strengthen operations in northern France and 161 million pounds for new approaches. The Home Office stated that 61 percent of small boats have been intercepted since the deal began, representing a five percent increase compared to last year.

French police are utilizing new techniques to stop crossings, including intercepting boats at sea and slashing abandoned dinghies on beaches with knives. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that the deal is already having a real impact. Charlie Eastaugh, director of maritime and small boats at the Border Security Command, noted that the French prevented all three boats that attempted to cross on a single Thursday.

Despite these efforts, thousands of illegal migrants continue to arrive in the UK. On one Monday, 250 people arrived, and in late July, a record 165 migrants reached the UK in a single boat. This vessel, described as a mega dinghy, was estimated to be 13 meters long. While overall Channel crossings are down approximately 40 percent compared to last year, some observers suggest bad weather has been a significant factor in the reduction.

Conservatives have criticized the announcement, calling it a joke and claiming that crossing preventions have actually decreased by half over the past year. To further disrupt smuggling, authorities in Germany have seized outboard engines and life preservers, while police have discovered boats buried on beaches.
