Ukraine launched one of its largest aerial assaults of the war on Sunday, targeting the Moscow region and other Russian territories with hundreds of drones. Russian authorities reported that approximately 600 drones were directed toward the capital, while the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have destroyed 822 drones across the country. The attacks resulted in at least six deaths in Russia, including five people in the Rostov region and an 83 year old man in the Moscow region. A major target of the offensive was Wildberries, Russia's largest e-commerce retailer. A warehouse in Podolsk, described as the company's largest, caught fire, and Ukrainian officials claimed that seven of the ten largest logistics centers of the company have been put out of service. Ukraine justifies these strikes by alleging that Wildberries is used to transport military supplies and drone components.
Simultaneously, Russia conducted missile and drone strikes across Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that at least three to seven people were killed, including two in the industrial city of Kryvyi Rih and one in Sumy. In Kryvyi Rih, a strike hit the ArcelorMittal steel plant, the largest in Ukraine, causing partial suspension of operations. In Kyiv, ballistic missile attacks caused several fires, including one that destroyed a large portion of the Petrovka book market. Zelenskyy stated that Russia launched over 1,550 drones, 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine in the past week, emphasizing a critical shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles to defend against high speed ballistics.
In a separate incident, a Spanish F-18 fighter jet operating on a NATO air policing mission shot down a drone over Romania. The drone had entered Romanian airspace from Moldova near the border with Ukraine. A NATO spokesperson stated that the drone appeared to be Russian, though Romanian authorities did not initially identify its origin.
