The Ukrainian Navy has reported the world's first naval battle between two unmanned surface vessels, claiming that one of its drone boats destroyed a Russian drone in the Black Sea. The engagement took place in mid September, with one source specifying the date as Saturday, September 12. According to the Ukrainian Navy, the Main Intelligence Directorate detected the target, which is reported to be an Orcan type explosive laden drone boat used by Russia to attack ports and naval vessels.
Ukraine utilized a Sargan 3000 unmanned boat equipped with a Protector 12.7 millimeter remotely operated weapon station to carry out the attack. Video footage released by the Ukrainian Navy shows the vessel tracking the Russian craft and firing bursts from the machine gun until the Russian vessel sank. The footage includes aerial imagery and onboard camera views.
The Sargan 3000 is one of several unmanned platforms operated by Ukraine, including the Sea Baby and Magura. The Ukrainian Navy recently participated in NATO's Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems in Portugal, where Ukraine led the Opposing Force to help develop new maritime tactics.
