A Ukrainian drone strike on the city of Nizhnekamsk in the Russian republic of Tatarstan killed at least 13 people, including a child, and injured between 39 and 75 others. Local officials and the Russian Investigative Committee reported that the attack hit both industrial and civilian targets, including a hostel where several migrant workers from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan were staying. The strike occurred more than 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, declared a day of mourning for the victims.
Ukraine's military confirmed the attack, stating that the Taneco oil refinery was the target. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said the strike was intended to reduce Russia's military potential. While Ukrainian sources focused on the refinery, some independent Russian reports suggested the Nizhnekamskneftekhim chemical plant may have also been hit. This event is described by several sources as one of the deadliest single attacks on Russian soil since the full scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that its air defenses intercepted 456 Ukrainian drones overnight across 16 Russian regions and occupied Crimea. Simultaneously, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces launched a massive artillery attack on a residential area in the village of Bugaivka in the Kharkiv region, which killed five people. Other Russian strikes were reported in Sumy and Zaporizhzhia.
Russian authorities have characterized the strike in Nizhnekamsk as a terrorist attack and a war crime. In response, Ukrainian officials stated that any civilian deaths in Russia are the responsibility of President Vladimir Putin, arguing that the targeted facilities support the Russian war effort.
