UN Envoy Warns of Dangerous New Phase in Yemen as Houthis Seize Strategic Port

United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg has warned the Security Council that the conflict in Yemen has entered a new and more dangerous phase following the collapse of a fragile four year truce. The warning follows the Houthi seizure of the strategic port city of Mocha, which is located near the Bab al Mandeb strait. This development gives the Houthi group a direct presence near a vital trade and energy route, raising international concerns over the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. Fighting has spread across the provinces of Taiz, Hodeidah, Marib, al Jawf, and al Bayda, resulting in the displacement of thousands of households. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has classified Yemen as a hunger hotspot of highest concern, with 18.3 million people facing acute food insecurity.

International reactions to the escalation have focused on the role of external support. The United States and Saudi Arabia have accused Iran of enabling the Houthis, with the United States demanding the unconditional release of detained UN and diplomatic personnel. Saudi Arabia reported that September 8 strikes by the Houthis wounded 73 civilians. In response, representatives from Yemen's internationally recognized government and Bahrain have called for stronger enforcement of arms embargos and sanctions to prevent weapons and expertise from reaching the group.
