United Nations officials stated on Tuesday that efforts to curb the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo are showing results, although they stressed it is too early to confidently say the outbreak has passed its peak. Julien Harneis, the UN special Ebola coordinator, described the epidemic as deadly and massive, noting that while some areas show progress, others continue to see growth in cases.
DRC Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba reported encouraging signs, stating that daily new cases have dropped from approximately 120 at the peak in mid August to around 80. He noted that 10 of the 62 affected health zones have recorded no new cases for more than 22 days. Jean Jacques Muyembe, director of the DRC National Institute for Biomedical Research, added that the situation in Ituri province has improved considerably.
Despite these gains, the World Health Organisation warned that it will take many months to fully control the outbreak. While progress is evident in Ituri, cases are rising quickly in North Kivu, particularly in Butembo. Thomas Paerisch of Médecins Sans Frontières described the situation in North Kivu as alarming due to high population density and a complex security environment. Government figures published Tuesday show 7,258 confirmed cases and 3,510 deaths across seven provinces.
