The United Nations Security Council has started a series of secret ballots to select the successor to Secretary-General António Guterres. These votes, known as straw polls, began today in New York. Seven candidates are currently competing for the position after Virginia Gamba of Argentina withdrew her candidacy in March. The remaining group consists of four women and three men from Senegal, Uganda, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Chile, and Guyana. Macky Sall and Olara Otunnu are among those bidding for the role.
The process involves a designation by the Security Council followed by a formal appointment by the General Assembly by January 2027. This follows the conclusion of Guterres' second term at the end of 2026.
