UN Warns of Renewed Large Scale Conflict in Yemen Following Houthi Attacks

The United Nations special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, stated that the country faces a greater risk of renewed large scale conflict than at any point since the April 2022 truce. This warning follows a series of Houthi attacks in the strategic, oil rich Marib province. On Friday, Houthi strikes killed at least 10 people, including two civilians in residential areas and displacement camps, according to the Saudi backed government health minister. A Yemeni military source reported that eight government forces members were killed and 12 wounded in these attacks.

The escalation follows a Thursday strike in which reports on casualties varied. One army source told AFP that at least 58 government troops were killed in rebel missile attacks, while another report stated at least 30 troops were killed. Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree claimed the rebels targeted the Sahn al-Jinn camp, hitting arsenals, vehicles, and military equipment with missiles and drones in response to a Saudi backed build up of forces.

In response, the Yemeni army announced it had conducted operations against Houthi forces on several fronts and vowed to take necessary military measures against further targeting. A source close to the Saudi military described Marib as a red line, stating that the Saudi led coalition would not accept a Houthi takeover of the province, though it noted the coalition does not seek escalation.
