UNICEF Report Finds 1 in 5 Youths Targeted by Online Sexual Abuse

A new UNICEF report estimates that one in five children aged 12 to 17 across 21 countries experienced some form of online sexual abuse or exploitation in a single year. The study, which polled approximately 21,000 internet users in regions including Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe, found that roughly 20 million children were affected. Specifically, 15 million were exposed to unwanted sexual content, 9 million were pressured into sexual conversations or image sharing, and 4 million had sexual images shared without their consent. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stated that these experiences cause profound emotional and mental distress.

Social media platforms were identified as the primary gateways for this abuse. Approximately 60 percent of assaults occurred on platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, while 14 percent took place on online gaming platforms. The report noted that the stereotype of a stranger as the perpetrator is often inaccurate; 57 percent of victims knew their abusers, who included friends, family members, or romantic partners. Only 16 percent of cases involved complete strangers. Reporting rates remain critically low, with fewer than 1 percent of cases reported to authorities.

Tech companies responded to the findings by highlighting their safety measures. A Meta spokesperson noted that some data was collected before the company implemented protections like private accounts for teens and restrictions on adult messaging. Meta also clarified that it views WhatsApp as a private messaging app rather than a social media platform. Snapchat and TikTok both cited their use of proactive detection, account removals, and default privacy settings for minors to combat predatory behavior.

Additional findings highlighted the role of emerging technology and psychological impact. One source reported that 1.1 million children in nine countries experienced the creation of AI generated sexual images or videos of themselves. Research indicated that victims of tech facilitated sexual exploitation were four times more likely to report suicidal thoughts or self harm and experienced higher levels of anxiety than their peers.
