The Union government informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that it is willing to return vacant National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Super Speciality (NEET-SS) seats to the state of Tamil Nadu. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati stated that the government is ready to revert the unfilled seats, which may include approximately 40 positions, following the second round of counselling. While the Centre expressed willingness to return these seats, it has not yet decided on the extent to which the qualifying percentile for admissions will be reduced.
The matter was brought before the court by the Tamil Nadu Medical Officers Association. The association challenged the diversion of 152 vacant seats to the All India Quota, arguing that these seats should be reserved for in-service government doctors, many of whom serve in rural areas. The petition noted that 111 candidates are currently on a waiting list and would become eligible if the qualifying percentile is lowered. The Centre has opposed the concept of reservation in super speciality courses, arguing that the limited number of seats should be allotted based on merit alone.
A bench led by Justice P.S. Narasimha noted the ongoing litigation and questioned how long the process would continue. The court has scheduled the next hearing for September 8 to hear the Centre's decision regarding the reduction of the qualifying percentile.
