The United States and Iran engaged in a direct exchange of military strikes on August 30 and 31, marking the first such confrontation in over a month. The escalation began Sunday night when the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) targeted Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM stated the action was a limited and precise measure to prevent the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from planting sea mines in the strategic shipping lane. Iranian state media reported that the attack killed two people and wounded several others.
Iran responded on Monday by launching ballistic missiles and drones at U.S. military targets in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. The Jordanian army reported intercepting eight missiles, while the UAE confirmed it intercepted a drone over its territorial waters. Iran claimed its strikes caused heavy damage to U.S. air bases, though the UAE dismissed reports that the Al Minhad Air Base was successfully targeted. In a separate development, Iran claimed a supertanker hit two mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a claim that CENTCOM denied, calling it disinformation.
President Donald Trump stated on Fox News that the U.S. would respond to the Iranian attacks and promised to hit them hard. On Truth Social, Trump called Iran a failed nation and posted an AI generated video depicting the destruction of Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil terminal. Iranian officials denied any attack on Kharg Island and described the video as laughable. Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, speaking at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan, stated that continuing the war is not in Iran's interest and called for dialogue and cooperation to prevent further conflict.
The conflict has caused global economic instability, with Brent crude oil prices rising above 90 dollars. While some sources describe the current flare up as a limited confrontation, others note that the U.S. and Iran remain at an impasse over control of the Strait of Hormuz. Diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan and Qatar have previously attempted to secure a peace deal, but no final agreement has materialized since a ceasefire in April.
