The United States marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks on Friday with ceremonies in New York and at the Pentagon. In New York, a crowd gathered at Ground Zero for a somber event that included the reading of victims' names and a minute by minute retracing of the attacks. The event was attended by Vice President J.D. Vance and four former presidents: George W. Bush, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton. President Donald Trump was absent from the New York ceremony, choosing instead to pay his respects at the Pentagon. In his remarks, Trump linked the war on terror to his current conflict in Iran and stated that the U.S. must fight to win.
While the New York event is generally apolitical, some bereaved family members used the occasion to criticize U.S. leaders and Saudi Arabia. Terry Strada, whose husband died in the Twin Towers, accused Saudi Arabia of complicity and criticized administrations for protecting the kingdom over the families of victims. Additionally, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the city's first Muslim leader, attended the event despite a petition with over 100,000 signatures urging him to stay away. A small anti Islam protest and counter protesters also gathered near City Hall. To coincide with the anniversary, the CIA declassified and published dozens of 9/11 related presidential intelligence briefs.
