United States Designates American Scholar Min Zin as Wrongfully Detained in China

The United States government has officially designated Min Zin, an American citizen and scholar, as wrongfully detained in China. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the determination following an extensive review of the circumstances surrounding Zin's arrest on June 3 in the Yunnan province. Zin, who is the director of the Institute for Strategy and Policy-Myanmar, was detained after traveling to China to attend an academic conference at the invitation of the Chinese government. Chinese authorities have accused Zin of spying and endangering national security.

This designation comes as President Donald Trump prepares to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House on September 24. The State Department has also called for the release of Youlin Chen, a Boston-based seismologist who has been designated as wrongfully detained since November 2024. According to the State Department, the safety of U.S. citizens is a top priority.

Min Zin is a former student activist in Myanmar's pro-democracy movement who later became a naturalized U.S. citizen and studied at UC Berkeley. His research focuses on the political dynamics and conflicts in Myanmar. His brother, Aung Maw Zin, told CNN that his brother has been held in solitary confinement and that his research was focused on Myanmar rather than China. While U.S. diplomatic personnel have seen Zin, his family has not been able to speak with him.
