United States Updates Travel Alert for Brazil Citing Crime and Kidnapping Risks

The United States Department of State issued an updated travel alert for Brazil on August 31, maintaining the country at Level 2. This level recommends that travelers exercise increased caution due to risks of crime and kidnapping. According to a spokesperson cited by CNN Brasil, the update was a routine periodic revision.

The alert warns that violent crimes, including homicide, armed robbery, and vehicle theft, occur in urban areas during both the day and night. The U.S. government noted that gang and organized crime activities are widespread and often linked to drug trafficking. Specific warnings were issued regarding the use of sedatives or drugs placed in drinks to facilitate robberies, particularly in Rio de Janeiro. The embassy also cautioned that criminals may target foreigners through dating apps or in bars.

Certain restrictions were placed on U.S. government employees, who now require special authorization to travel to specific areas. These include informal housing settlements, areas within 160 kilometers of land borders (excluding Foz do Iguaçu and the Pantanal), and specific Administrative Regions of Brasília such as Ceilândia, Santa Maria, São Sebastião, and Paranoá between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Government staff were also advised against using municipal buses due to risks of assault and robbery.

General recommendations for all travelers include avoiding the display of valuables such as jewelry, phones, and cameras. The alert mentions that while extortionate kidnappings of U.S. citizens are infrequent and Brazilians are the primary victims, foreigners remain exposed to these risks.
