Unvaccinated Pennsylvania Woman Dies as Measles Outbreak Grows

A 40 year old unvaccinated woman in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, has died from complications associated with measles, according to the county coroner. This marks the third measles related death in the United States this year, with all three occurring in Pennsylvania. The state is currently experiencing a significant outbreak with 676 recorded cases and 124 hospitalizations. The woman had several chronic medical conditions, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and required supplemental oxygen at all times. The coroner noted that the death was a reminder that measles can be a life threatening disease.

Two previous deaths occurred in August in Lancaster County, a rural area with a large Amish population. One of those deaths involved a six week old infant with a genetic condition. However, the Lancaster County coroner disputed whether a second infant death, caused by a ruptured spleen, was actually linked to the virus. Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control reports 3,294 cases of measles across more than 45 states so far in 2026.

The outbreak has triggered a political conflict between state and federal officials. US Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has accused Pennsylvania's Democrat led government of weaponizing infectious disease fears for political gain and suggested that some reports may have been fabricated. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has accused Kennedy of spreading conspiracy theories and misinformation. Additionally, the director of the CDC stated that Pennsylvania has not requested federal Epi Aid support despite offers of assistance.
