The United States and Iran engaged in a significant exchange of military strikes on Tuesday and Wednesday, marking the most serious escalation in weeks. US Central Command announced that it launched a wave of strikes against targets of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Iran, specifically targeting air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine laying capabilities, and communications sites. The US military stated these actions were in response to IRGC attempts to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and threats against US service members in the region. President Donald Trump described the strikes as large and powerful, warning that any retaliation would be met with a much harder and higher level of force.

Iran retaliated by launching missiles and drones at US military bases in Jordan, Iraq, and Bahrain, with some reports also mentioning attacks in Kuwait. The Jordanian Armed Forces reported intercepting 10 of 13 ballistic missiles, while three landed in remote areas without causing casualties. The IRGC claimed to have killed a large number of US forces at Camp Titin in Jordan and destroyed facilities in Erbil, Iraq; however, US officials told Reuters that there were no American casualties in Jordan. In Kuwait, air defenses intercepted hostile drones, and Bahrain reported explosions and intercepted drones.

Civilian casualties were reported in Iran. The Iranian Red Crescent and state media reported that a US strike hit a wedding celebration in Sirik, killing four or five people, including a child, and wounding between 50 and 68 others. The US military stated that it never targets civilians. Other explosions were reported in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm island, and Jiroft.

The conflict has caused global oil prices to rise, with Brent crude climbing above 94 US dollars per barrel. This military activity follows the expiration of a June ceasefire agreement. While Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran would reciprocate if the US returned to its commitments under the Memorandum of Understanding, President Trump expressed little interest in negotiations, claiming the US has almost total control of the Strait of Hormuz and that the Iranian economy is collapsing.
