US and Iran Reach Diplomatic Impasse Following Expiration of Temporary Agreement

Negotiations to end the war between the United States and Iran have reached an impasse following the expiration of a 60 day Memorandum of Understanding on Monday. President Donald Trump stated that no talks are currently underway or scheduled and maintained that the US maritime blockade of Iran remains in effect. Conversely, an advisor to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei stated that Iran remains open to dialogue, provided that negotiations are not mistaken for surrender. Control of the Strait of Hormuz remains a primary point of contention. President Trump claimed the waterway is open and that sea mines have been removed, while Iran asserts the strait remains closed. Additionally, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged an Israeli strike on a military airport in northwestern Syria, which the US condemned as an unnecessary escalation.
