US Cyber Agency Warns of Increased Attacks on Water Infrastructure Following Minnesota Incidents

The United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has warned of a significant increase in cyber threat actors targeting programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used in water and wastewater systems. The agency urged operators to disconnect these systems from the internet as soon as possible. This warning follows a coordinated cyberattack on July 26 and 27 that targeted more than 30 community water systems in Minnesota. While state and local officials stated that water safety was not threatened, some systems went offline and required manual resets. The FBI reported that utility companies in at least seven states have reported similar incidents, with some experiencing operational effects such as loss of pressure and flooding.

US officials and investigators suspect that Iranian linked hackers are behind the Minnesota attacks. Experts noted that the attackers targeted vulnerable systems, such as small utilities using default passwords.
