The US military conducted a two-hour wave of strikes against dozens of targets in Iran on Wednesday night, retaliating for an attempted Iranian missile attack on US forces in Jordan. According to CENTCOM, the operation took place between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET, targeting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facilities including military command centers, drone and missile sites, coastal surveillance, and maritime capabilities. Reports from Iranian state media indicated explosions in southern cities such as Bushehr, Ahwaz, and on Qeshm Island, where a residential area was reportedly hit. One official described the strikes as "wide, extensive, and impactful," noting they were twice the size of previous bombardments.
The operation followed an attack on Tuesday in which Iran fired multiple ballistic missiles at US military installations in Jordan; Jordanian air defenses successfully shot down five of those missiles. President Donald Trump had previously vowed to respond, stating that the US would hit Iran "very hard."
Simultaneously, the US and Saudi Arabia carried out joint strikes against Iran-backed militias in eastern Iraq in response to drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities. These operations targeted logistics and weapons sites, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 fighters and several Iranian advisers.
The conflict has expanded further across the region. A US-owned gas storage tanker was hit by a drone at Egypt's Mediterranean port of Damietta, while Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia. Additionally, Israel accused Hezbollah of violating a ceasefire via a drone attack. Despite these escalations, a Qatar Energy LNG tanker successfully exited the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday midnight.
Outlets with center-right leans framed the strikes as a powerful and necessary response to Iranian aggression. In contrast, those with center-left leans emphasized the dangerous escalation of the war and its expansion into new territories like Egypt. Center-leaning outlets focused primarily on the chronological sequence of retaliatory actions across multiple regional fronts.

- Centre

- Centre-right
- Framed the US strikes as a powerful, decisive response to Iranian aggression and highlighted President Trump's resolve.
