The US Supreme Court has been asked to intervene in a legal battle over Missouri's congressional map ahead of the November midterm elections. An anti gerrymandering group called People Not Politicians filed an emergency appeal on Wednesday to block a Republican drawn map from being used. This request follows a series of conflicting court orders involving state and federal courts.
The dispute centers on a map enacted last year that targets a Democratic district based in Kansas City. The Missouri Supreme Court previously blocked the map, ruling that voters should have the opportunity to decide on it via a referendum after a petition gathered more than 300,000 signatures. While Justice Brett Kavanaugh initially denied a request from state officials to review this block, a US District Judge later issued an order that would essentially require the state to proceed with the GOP map. A federal appeals court in St. Louis declined to pause that decision, leading the opposition group to return to the US Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court has requested a response from Missouri by Thursday morning. The outcome will determine whether the state uses the new map or a previous version for the upcoming election.
