The USS Abraham Lincoln, a nuclear powered aircraft carrier with approximately 5,000 personnel, departed Thailand on Sunday following a five day port visit. The ship docked at Laem Chabang, near the resort city of Pattaya, on Wednesday for rest and recreation after a lengthy deployment in the Middle East that included combat operations and a naval blockade in the war with Iran. According to the U.S. Navy, the visit served as a respite for the crew.
Local officials in Pattaya reported that the sailors spent an estimated 100 million baht, or 3 million dollars, during their stay. While the Pattaya police chief stated the visit ended largely without incident, he noted a trivial drunken altercation between two Americans on Thursday that required the U.S. Navy to send the sailors back to the ship.
The visit occurred amid reports of deteriorating living conditions on board the vessel. Democratic lawmakers had previously called for an investigation into food shortages, broken plumbing, and mental health crises, with some claiming the ship set a modern day record for consecutive days at sea. Reports indicated that sailors had gone without basic toiletries such as soap and toothpaste at points during the deployment. President Donald Trump dismissed these concerns, which critics linked to his approach to the war on Iran. The USS George Washington eventually replaced the Lincoln in the Middle East.
