Uttar Pradesh Education Officials Restrict Social Media Access Amid Gen Alpha School Protests

District education officials in Uttar Pradesh have issued orders restricting the entry of outsiders, including YouTubers, into government schools. The orders, issued in districts such as Azamgarh, Ballia, Sultanpur, and Balrampur, require individuals linked to social media to obtain permission from a designated officer to enter. Officials stated that unauthorized entry affects school operations and that these measures are necessary to maintain decorum.

The restrictions follow protests by students, referred to as Gen Alpha, who have been using social media to publicize poor school conditions. Protesting students have engaged in sit-ins at school gates, locked up staff members, and marched to local authority offices. Video evidence from these protests has shown dilapidated classrooms with crumbling roofs, missing desks, and clogged toilets.

Opposition parties have condemned the ban as a draconian move intended to hide structural failures in the education system and avoid accountability. Meanwhile, some reports highlight a discrepancy between these ground realities and official government data. While the Unified District Information System for Education reports that nearly all government schools have toilet and drinking water facilities, activists argue that school principals may inflate data to protect their jobs.
