Valter Lavitola to Appear Before Judge Following Arrest in Ranucci Bombing Plot

Valter Lavitola will appear before a judge on Wednesday morning at Rebibbia prison following his arrest as the alleged mastermind behind a bombing attack targeting journalist Sigfrido Ranucci. Investigators believe Lavitola orchestrated the attack to increase Ranucci's popularity and launch him into a political career aimed at Palazzo Chigi, though they maintain Ranucci was unaware of the plot. Lavitola previously denied the charges, describing them as disconcerting, although he later made comments to Mow magazine suggesting the attack would have served a purpose if carried out by Gomes Tavares in agreement with Ranucci. Prosecutors are now seeking the extradition of Gomes Tavares, who is suspected of acting as the intermediary with the group that planted the device outside Ranucci's home in Pomezia.

The legal proceedings have sparked a political conflict involving Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini. Salvini has argued that public funds should not be used to pay the salary of someone involved in such a murky and sad affair until full clarity is established regarding the relationship between Ranucci and Lavitola. Ranucci responded via social media, stating that Salvini has requested his suspension from the Rai. Ranucci's lawyer, Roberto De Vita, has described the journalist as a triple victim of the attack, a betrayal by a friend, and a persistent campaign of political and media lynching.
