Ven. Jinwoo, the incumbent head of the Jogye Order, was reelected as the leader of South Korea's largest Buddhist sect on Thursday. Jinwoo won 57 percent of the vote, receiving 183 out of 321 total votes, while his opponent, Ven. Gyeongwoo, received 43 percent with 138 votes. This marks the first time a leader has served a second term in 13 years, following Ven. Jaseung in 2013.
As the leader of the denomination, Jinwoo oversees approximately 3,500 temples and 12,000 monks across the country. He is set to begin his four year term on September 28, pending approval from the order's elders assembly. In his acceptance remarks, Jinwoo vowed to stabilize the order and make Buddhism younger and more dynamic to usher in a new century for Korean Buddhism.
