Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring Arrives in Osaka for Rare Exhibition

Johannes Vermeer's masterpiece, Girl with a Pearl Earring, is being exhibited at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka from August 21 to September 27. The painting is part of a larger collection from the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, which includes twelve paintings such as Rembrandt's The Laughing Man. This marks the first time the painting has been shown in Japan since 2012. The Mauritshuis director, Martine Gosselink, stated that the loan was granted because of the high number of Japanese admirers for Vermeer, noting that this may be the final time the painting travels to Japan. The loan was made possible because the Mauritshuis is undergoing maintenance and will remain closed until September 20. Princess Aiko arrived in Osaka by air on August 20 to attend the opening ceremony. She wore a blue dress and pearl earrings while meeting with Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura. The exhibition is organized by the Asahi Shimbun and other partners. The painting has a history of visiting Japan, including exhibitions in Tokyo, Kobe, and Osaka in previous years.
