Viktor Orbán Returns to Political Activity at Annual Kötcse Picnic

Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has signaled his return to active politics during the annual Kötcse Picnic. Orbán announced his return via a social media video stating that he is back and it is time to get to work. Upon arriving at the event around 2:00 PM, Orbán told journalists that he had been tired after 16 years of continuous governing and had taken some necessary rest. He described the previous 16 years as fantastic and claimed that Fidesz created a sovereign and successful country. When asked if he was officially returning to politics, he responded briefly with the word Kötcse.

Fidesz party officials emphasized that Orbán remains the unquestionable leader of their political community. Fidesz faction leader János Bóka stated that the party now serves as the political opposition to the current Tisza government and the system it is building. Other Fidesz representatives criticized the Tisza government for its fuel support policies, arguing that the previous administration provided protected prices for all drivers. Former State Secretary Péter Takács defended the quality of the previous government's 16 year tenure while suggesting that the Tisza party gained support by avoiding specific positions to attract a diverse range of voters.

The event was characterized by high security, with reports that streets were closed and entry was restricted to vehicles on a specific list. Attendees included former Interior Minister Sándor Pintér, who stated he is now retired, as well as András Schiffer and musician Feró Nagy. Orbán also addressed specific controversies, dismissing the Tisza government's legal complaints against previous administrations as political propaganda and declining to name the person who nominated a pedophile orphanage director for a state award.
