Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor best known for his roles as Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise and Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, has died at the age of 85. His agent, Kevin Motley, stated that Cullen passed away peacefully on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family.
Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots, in the 1984 animated series. He later returned to the role for the live action film franchise starting in 2007. Cullen noted that the character's authoritative voice was inspired by his brother, Larry, a retired US Marine Corps captain. For his work on the Transformers: Prime series, Cullen earned a Daytime Emmy nomination.
In addition to his work in Transformers, Cullen voiced the melancholic donkey Eeyore starting with The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in the late 1980s. His extensive career also included roles in The Smurfs, G.I. Joe, and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. He provided the roars for the 1976 King Kong remake and created the clicking sounds for the monster in the 1987 film Predator.
His family requested that the public honor his legacy by serving their communities with compassion, integrity, and loyalty, reminding others to be strong enough to be gentle.
