Volkswagen Plant in Osnabrück to Transition to Israeli Weapons Production

Volkswagen Group has announced plans to sell its factory in Osnabrück, Germany, to the Israeli investment fund Aurelius Capital and the state government of Lower Saxony. The facility, which currently produces convertibles, will transition to the production of air defense systems and components for Germany and Europe in collaboration with the Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. The move is expected to preserve 1,200 of the 1,800 jobs at the site, which Volkswagen had previously slated to stop car production by autumn of next year.

Reports indicate that the current ownership structure was designed to bypass a veto from Qatar, a major Volkswagen shareholder with a 17 percent stake. According to the Israeli news site Ynet, Volkswagen initially sought to sell the plant directly to Rafael, but Qatar resisted due to the company's role in the Israeli defense industry. Amnesty International previously listed Rafael as a company contributing to illegal occupation or genocide. By placing the factory under Aurelius Capital, Volkswagen avoids a direct link with an Israeli state company.

The transition occurs as Volkswagen faces a broader crisis characterized by falling sales and competition from China, leading to a reorganization plan that could cut 100,000 jobs globally. While the IG Metall union and the works council welcomed the sale as a new industrial perspective for the region, some analysts warn that the cycles of the defense industry differ from the long term nature of automotive projects.
