The West Bengal government has ordered the closure of 252 madrassas and issued show-cause notices to approximately 100 others. This action follows a state wide survey conducted across all districts since early June to assess infrastructure, management systems, and approval status. Minority Affairs and Madrasah Education Minister Kshudiram Tudu stated that the exercise was initiated following directions from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to identify authorized and unauthorized institutions. Tudu clarified that madrassas with the necessary approvals will continue to function.
State Panchayati Raj Minister Dilip Ghosh stated that the government received repeated complaints regarding some institutions. He alleged that individuals arrested for alleged involvement in extremist activities had been working as teachers at some of these madrassas. Ghosh added that the government will not allow institutions to be opened indiscriminately to cause trouble. In response, Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh argued that all madrassas should not be painted with the same brush.
