Wildfires Rage Across Greece as Heatwaves Impact Southern Europe

Greek authorities have ordered evacuations in several regions as multiple wildfires spread across the country, fueled by strong north winds with gusts reaching 150 kilometers per hour. In the capital region of Attica, a fire on Mount Poikilo prompted the partial evacuation of the Chaidari suburb. Simultaneously, a large blaze in the central region of Boeotia spread eastward toward the capital, forcing the evacuation of coastal towns including Porto Germeno and Prosili. Approximately 500 residents and visitors were rescued by boat from the town of Agios Vasileios after they became trapped by the flames. Other significant fires continue to burn in the Peloponnese peninsula, where the archaeological site of Mycenae was preventatively evacuated, and on the island of Crete, where a fire has destroyed at least 4,500 hectares of forest. Three firefighters died on Wednesday while operating in Crete and the Gition region. The crisis is part of a broader pattern across Southern Europe, where heatwaves have created favorable conditions for wildfires. In Portugal, firefighters are battling a blaze near Valpaços that has burned thousands of hectares. Spain has seen its largest recorded wildfire in the Avila region, though authorities recently suspended a state of emergency near Madrid as some fires were contained. Turkey has also reported over 200 wildfires since Wednesday, including active fires near Antalya. While some reports focus on the immediate emergency response in Greece, others highlight the broader environmental context, noting that climate change and successive heatwaves have dried out vegetation and increased the risk of fire across the continent.
