Woman killed and two injured in armed attack in Manipur's Tamenglong district

A woman was killed and two family members were injured in an attack by unidentified armed individuals in Tollen village, located in the Tamenglong district of Manipur. The deceased has been identified as Lhingzangai Singsit. Her husband, Seineh Singsit, and their son sustained gunshot wounds during the incident, which occurred early Sunday morning. Assam Rifles personnel rescued the injured father and son and moved them to Jiribam for medical treatment.

The attack took place on September 13, a date observed by the Kuki community as Black Day or Sahnit Ni to commemorate lives lost during the Kuki Naga ethnic conflict of the early 1990s. Tollen is a Kuki settlement, while the nearby Kaimai village is predominantly inhabited by Naga people.

Various groups have responded to the violence. Kuki Civil Society Organisations and the Kuki Youth Organisation Women's Council condemned the attack and demanded a thorough investigation and stronger security measures for vulnerable civilians. The Kaimai Naga Village Authority also condemned the act, stating it appeared to be a malicious attempt to create division between communities that have lived together peacefully.

Reporting on the perpetrators varied across outlets. A center left source noted that locals suspected members of a Naga extremist group were responsible, citing a previous attack in Kangpokpi district. In contrast, center and center right sources emphasized that the perpetrators remain unidentified and that no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
