The World Athletics Ultimate Championship begins this weekend in Budapest, featuring 381 top athletes from 65 federations. The three day event is designed to pit the best athletes against each other with a total prize fund of 10 million dollars. Winners of individual events will receive 130,000 euros. A top sprinter could potentially earn 337,500 dollars for winning the 100m, 200m, and mixed 4x100m relay.
The competition will utilize a high production value featuring light, color, and augmented reality. Innovations include glowing javelins and hammers to increase visibility on a black infield. World Athletics president Sebastian Coe and chief executive Jon Ridgeon created the event to serve as an incubator for change and a glimpse into the future of the sport. Coe stated that the organization intends to take some of these innovations into the Olympic Games and world championships.
Beyond the immediate competition, World Athletics is reviewing its commercial structures. The organization's current commercial contract with the agency Dentsu ends in 2029. After that date, World Athletics will be in a position to sell its own commercial and broadcast rights for the first time in three decades to increase revenue and growth.
