The second edition of the World Humanoid Robot Games took place in Beijing from August 22 to August 26. The event featured 51 events, including 30 sporting competitions and 21 scenario based contests. These challenges ranged from sports like table tennis, soccer, and kickboxing to practical tasks such as washing laundry and simulating emergency situations in offices or factories. Some robots demonstrated significant progress by beating the human 100 meter sprint record and the standing high jump record. Dipam Patel, a PhD candidate at Purdue University, noted that these achievements indicate a huge push in engineering and whole body control since the previous games.
Despite these records, the event was marked by numerous technical failures. Reports describe robots fainting during ping pong matches, crashing into barriers during races, and falling during tug of war and weightlifting events. Some robots broke at the waist, emitted sparks, or caught fire. Developers stated that these incidents often occur due to unexpected conditions that only emerge during competition despite months of preparation. The event is viewed as a national showcase for China's rapidly developing robotics industry and a testing ground for commercial products.
