Yokohama Mayor Yamanaka Resigns Amid Power Harassment Allegations

Yokohama Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka has announced his resignation following an investigation into allegations of verbal abuse and power harassment toward city employees. Reports indicate that Yamanaka allegedly called staff members human trash and told a senior official to commit seppuku, or ritual suicide, if the city failed to win a bid for an international conference. While Yamanaka has expressed a need to take responsibility, he has not explicitly ruled out running in a runoff election.

In response to the situation, the support association for Mayor Yamanaka held a board meeting on the 31st and decided to remain active in anticipation of a potential runoff bid. However, the group faced significant internal division. A majority of the board members, including those from the business community, withdrew from the association. These members cited the practical interests of Yokohama, including the upcoming international horticultural exposition in March, as reasons why Yamanaka can no longer lead. Only members associated with the medical association and the port authority remained in the group.
