Zamboanga City declares Day of Mourning after fatal Ateneo shooting

Zamboanga City has declared a Day of Mourning and suspended all classes following a shooting on Tuesday, August 18, at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University high school campus in Barangay Tumaga that left two students dead. Police are investigating the incident as a premeditated attack. According to reports, a 9th grade student shot a 10th grade student before taking his own life. The shooter also allegedly fired at a teacher who remained unharmed. Police recovered 9mm pistols at the scene, and the Bureau of Customs stated that one firearm belonged to a Customs security official who is the father of the shooter. The official has since been relieved of his duties.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered a thorough investigation into the event and called for stronger safeguards to ensure student safety. Mayor Khymer Olaso and Vice Mayor Beng Climaco expressed their condolences to the families and urged city unity. Additionally, the Al Qalam Institute for Islamic Identities and Dialogue in Southeast Asia expressed sorrow and solidarity with the university community, offering prayers for the victims and their families.
