Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Democratic Senate Primary

Abdul El-Sayed has won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Michigan. His victory occurred despite significant opposition, including an endorsement from the sitting Democratic governor and over 60 million dollars in outside spending, with 32 million dollars of that coming from AIPAC. Senator Bernie Sanders described the result as the biggest upset he has ever heard of in his life.

El-Sayed's campaign focused on linking U.S. military aid to Israel with domestic needs, such as funding for Michigan schools. He has argued that U.S. resources should be managed for the people he represents rather than being spent on foreign armaments. In Michigan's 13th Congressional District, Democratic socialist Donavan McKinney is the presumptive nominee after defeating a candidate backed by AIPAC and MAGA. Additionally, Zohran Mamdani and other democratic socialists have won seats in the House of Representatives in New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.

A center-left source frames El-Sayed's victory as a strategic formula for Democrats to defeat Trumpism by merging nationalism with progressivism.
