Afghan National Accused of Killing Scottish Woman Found in Athens Suitcase

Greek authorities have accused a 26 year old Afghan man of the intentional homicide of Elisabeth Jane Ross, a 38 year old Scottish charity worker whose body was discovered in a suitcase within an abandoned building in the Kypseli area of Athens on July 18. The suspect, identified as Sharif Ahmadzai, has admitted to hiding the body in the suitcase and transporting it to the site, as well as using the victim's credit cards to withdraw 10,000 euros. However, he has denied committing the murder, claiming instead that he discovered the body in a flat he helped manage in the Exarchia district.

Investigators believe Ross died between July 15 and July 18. Forensic scientists suggest she was likely asphyxiated, though an initial autopsy was inconclusive due to advanced decay. Police report that the suspect used the victim's phone to send misleading text messages to her family and friends after her death to delay the discovery of her disappearance. A replica pistol and a knife were recovered from the suspect's home, and he faces charges including manslaughter, robbery, and violation of weapons laws.

Alaina Hall, a US citizen and the partner of the suspect, reportedly played a significant role in the investigation by contacting police after becoming suspicious of Ahmadzai's movements and wealth. Ross was a long time member of the City on a Hill church in Edinburgh and was known for her passion for missionary work. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Police Scotland have confirmed they are providing support to the family and liaising with Greek authorities.
