Anthropic has announced a new framework called the Model Hardware Standard (MHS) designed to allow AI agents to operate and communicate with physical devices. The standard provides a common language for AI to interact with programmable interfaces in environments such as scientific laboratories and manufacturing facilities. This includes hardware such as robotic arms, microscopes, liquid handlers, and quantum computing equipment. The company has already tested the framework with partners including Genentech and HHMI Janelia. Despite the potential for automation, Anthropic noted limitations in the AI's understanding of the physical world, such as a case where the AI failed to correctly handle bubbles during liquid handling until a human explained the cause. The company stated it will work with trusted partners to maximize safety before making the standard generally available. This follows the previous introduction of the Model Context Protocol, which focused on AI interaction with software programs.
