Commuters in Singapore have been able to use Apple Pay Express Mode on the MRT and LRT networks since mid August. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on September 4 that the feature is intended to be extended across the entire public transport network by the end of 2027. Express Mode allows users to tap in and out using an iPhone or Apple Watch without waking the device, unlocking it, or using authentication methods such as Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. While retail payments still require authentication, this specific feature is designed for public transport payments and is used in major transit systems internationally. On buses, the feature currently only works with enhanced card readers. These readers, which feature larger displays and faster updates on SimplyGo transactions, are being progressively rolled out across the bus fleet. For buses not yet equipped with these readers, commuters must continue to unlock their devices or authenticate their identity to pay fares. The LTA stated that testing the new readers under real world conditions allows them to evaluate performance and reliability before a full fleet rollout.
