At least 16 killed in separate India temple stampede and hotel fire

At least 16 people died in two separate incidents in eastern India on Monday. A stampede at the Ashok Dham Temple in Bihar's Lakhisarai District killed seven people and injured more than a dozen others. A fire at a four story hotel in the temple town of Tarapith, West Bengal, killed at least seven people according to one report, while another report placed the death toll at nine, including two children.

The stampede in Bihar occurred as thousands of devotees gathered for the third Monday of Shravan, a period dedicated to Lord Shiva. Preliminary reports indicate that an electric wire snapped outside the temple at about 6:30am, causing panic. A section of barricades collapsed under the weight of the crowd, leading to a crush.

The fire in Tarapith broke out around 4:00am to 4:30am on the ground floor of Hotel Bideshini. Many of the guests were pilgrims visiting the local temple complex. While one report notes that hotel management attributed the blaze to an electrical component in the power supply system, another report highlights that emergency exits were locked and the terrace door was blocked with plywood. Police in West Bengal have arrested the hotel owner, Prabir Kumar Pal, and his son, Kalyan Pal, as they investigate lapses in fire safety.
