Augusto Cury Emerges as Third Force in Brazilian Presidential Race

Psychiatrist and author Augusto Cury has seen a significant rise in polling for the 2026 presidential election, establishing himself as a third option in a race dominated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. According to seven different polling institutes, including Datafolha and Quaest, Cury's support has jumped from approximately 2% to a range between 7% and 11%. This growth is attributed to increased visibility from media appearances and a surge in social media followers.

While Cury has gained ground, Lula continues to lead in first round scenarios. However, Datafolha reports that Lula's lead over Flávio Bolsonaro has narrowed to five points, with 38% and 33% of intentions respectively. In a potential second round matchup, the gap closes further to 46% for Lula and 44% for Bolsonaro, placing them within the margin of error. Additionally, Datafolha indicates that Lula's government approval has declined, with 42% of respondents rating it as bad or awful.

Cury's ascent has primarily drawn votes from undecided voters and candidates with lower polling numbers, such as Ronaldo Caiado, Romeu Zema, and Renan Santos. A center leaning perspective suggests Cury is channeling a sentiment of anti politics and fatigue regarding polarization, though it notes his lack of political experience in debates. Conversely, a center right leaning perspective emphasizes Cury's professional success as a renowned author and his ability to consolidate a firm base of independent voters.
